Write or Die

Write or Die is a great website made by a guy who calls himself  Dr. Wicked. It's incredibly helpful for Nano-writers. Here's how it works: You pick either a word count goal or a time goal. Then you select a consequence: gentle, normal, kamikaze, or electric shock. Then you select a grace period: forgiving, strict, or evil. I usually use normal and strict.  Then click WRITE, and, well, write!

You literally have to keep writing if you want your novel to live. Depending on the settings that you chose, after a certain amount of time of not typing, the screen will turn red and warning noises will sound before it starts deleting your work. It's kinda stressful, but really fun!

Write or Die has helped me a lot this week, which has been my not-writing week. I just wrote 1,153 words using Write or Die. My goal for today is to write 2,000 words. I've done the math and figured out several ways to catch up with my scheduled word count. Either way, I need to have 13,000 words by November 27.

I started this novel last year, but I'm still writing it for Nanowrimo. So, my word count for Nanowrimo starts at Chapter 9 in my novel. Does that make sense? The numbers below are for the subset of the novel that I have written during Nanowrimo, as well as for the entire novel.

Nanowrimo word-count: 7,507
Nanowrimo % of goal: 50.05%
Nanowrimo pages: 16 computer pages = about 32 book pages
Nanowrimo chapters: 3

Entire novel word count: 19,962
Entire novel pages: 43 computer pages = about 86 book pages
Entire novel chapters: 11

  1. Thanks for clearing that up! I thought maybe you were writing two novels simultaneously. Good luck this week! Don't forget to eat...
